FAQ

What is "lifestyle" photography?

Lifestyle photography is a candid, documentary-esque approach to capturing your photos. Our session will place less emphasis on posing and more focus on capturing your family naturally. My sessions are typically scheduled outdoors or in your home and involve very few props or accessories. I generally give some light direction or prompts to encourage natural interaction, and I capture the magic as it plays out! I chose to shoot in this format because it's the only way I know how! When I photographed our 3 babies, I felt more drawn to photos of them stretching out of a big yawn in their crib rather than balled up in an awkward swaddle on a beanbag. The photos on the walls of my home capture sweet little moments that occurred more organically. My goal is that my clients look back on their photos and can remember what that velvety newborn skin felt like, or how perfect the sound of toddler belly laughter is, or how blissfully exhausted they were when that new baby joined the family. Childhood is such a rapidly fleeting time and my hope is that the photos from our session can rekindle the emotions from those moments even years later.

What in the world should we wear?!

Ah yes - the concern of every mom who has ever booked a photography session for her family! First and foremost, pick something comfortable for each participant, especially your children. If a kiddo is itchy or too hot/too cold or their pants are too tight, etc...it's going to show in your photos. Comfort is key. Second to comfort I would say is color. I often shoot in natural, woodsy environments. I personally feel that muted neutrals are best as they photograph nicely and don't cast back onto the subjects. I'd suggest avoiding very busy patterns or bold prints. A great alternative to pattern or print is texture (knits, tulle, velvet, metallics, etc). Texture can allow for diversity in your outfits without being overly busy or distracting. I'm no stylist, but I'm glad to answer any questions you might have about wardrobe before your shoot.

Why is a "child or baby-led" approach important?

After spending the last 6 years raising our 3 sweet babies, one thing I've learned is that forcing a little one to do something will almost always end in tears or a tantrum. When I photograph your babies, I treat them like I would my own. We go on adventures. We look for big foot. We play fun games. We literally stop to smell the flowers. We pause when the baby needs fed or when a little one needs cuddles. I take extra time to warm up so they're not too anxious about the lady with the camera. There's never any forced posing or pushing through a session just to get done by a specific time. Letting your littles take the lead with the session seems to give me better results and makes for a more enjoyable time for everyone! Ultimately, if a young child or baby is distraught and can't be consoled, we can consider switching the session to a different day.

How long will it take for me to get my photos back?

Edited photos from your session will be delivered within 30 days of your session date via a private online gallery.

Galleries from family or maternity sessions usually include between 50-100ish photos (give or take). Galleries from in-home newborn sessions are often much larger as the sessions last for 2 to 3 hours and yield more images.
